Dr. George F. Spagna is a professor of physics at Randolph-Macon College and the director of the Keeble Observatory and the Bassett Internship Program. A native of Portland, Oregon, Dr. Spagna received his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, before moving to Ashland in 1986.
Originally elected to the Ashland Town Council in 2004, Dr. Spagna served two terms as vice mayor before being elected as the town’s mayor in 2014. Now in his third term on the council, Dr. Spagna has been active in every area of town government including serving as a liaison to the town planning commission, economic development authority, and Hanover County.
Dr. Spagna also serves as a member of the Committee on Priesthood for the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, as the treasurer of Hanover Interfaith Free Clinics, and on various college faculty committees.
