Town Council to Consider Agreement to Upgrade Pedestrian Crossings at Dec. 7th Council Meeting

At their December 7th meeting, members of Ashland’s Town Council will discuss and consider the adoption of an agreement with CSX around upgrades and changes to Ashland’s existing pedestrian railroad crossings.

CSX is requesting an update to the original 1967 crossing agreement with RF&P railroad to account for the substantial changes to rail, vehicular, and pedestrian traffic that have occurred over the last four decades. The agreement would also update terms and conditions to current-day legal standards and clearly distinguish CSX and Town of Ashland responsibilities.

If adopted by Town Council, CSX will add four new pedestrian crossings alongside the existing vehicular crossings at Patrick Street, England Street, Myrtle Street, and Francis Street. The pedestrian-only crossings at Francis Street, Maiden Lane, Robinson Street, and Cross Brothers will be removed to accommodate the new crossings, and the Lee Street crossing will be relocated to a more central location.

The new crossings will be constructed of more durable materials and improve pedestrian safety, while also maintaining the total number of pedestrian crossings currently in the Town (11). This agreement between the Town of Ashland and CSX is not related to DC2RVA.

Residents and interested community members wishing to provide comments to Town Council about this agreement may do so in advance by contacting Matt Reynal at: mreynal@ashlandva.gov / (804) 798-9219 or by attending next week’s Town Council meeting in person. Town Council will meet on Tuesday, December 7th at 7:00 pm in Council Chambers, located inside Ashland’s Town Hall (121 Thompson Street).
